The Geography of Lake Towada

Surrounded by primary forest, the beauty of Lake Towada's indigo blue water gives few hints about the lake's violent volcanic origin in the Nasu Volcanic Zone. A topographical survey of the lakebed shows that the lake was formed by the subsidence of two calderas. The first subsidence created a large oblong pan about 100 meters deep. Small cones and domes began to dot the floor of the pan until a lava dome on the edge of the new lake collapsed and created a deep "hole" (Naka no Umi). Water rushing to fill the hole scoured the original lakebed, forming gullies that angle toward Naka no Umi. From the surface of the water, Nakayama-hanto and Ogura-hanto (Nakayama and Ogura Peninsulas) jut into the lake and define a large cove, Naka no Umi. The slender arms of the peninsulas are segments of the second collapsed crater's walls, and the "knob" on end of Ogura-hanto is an extinct lava dome. Gomonseki, the islet in the lake, is actually the tip of another lava dome. Lake Towada was designated a national park in 1936.

Elevation: 400 meters above sea level
Deepest point: 327 meters (Naka no Umi)
   Water clarity: 20 meters.
